As the leaves change and the year begins to wind down, charitable giving often moves to the top of our minds. The final months of the year are a natural time to reflect on what matters most, revisit our goals, and consider how we can make a meaningful difference.

But thoughtful giving doesn't have to wait until December.

Whether you're supporting organizations you've known for years or exploring new causes, a little preparation now can help make your year-end giving more intentional and less stressful.

1. Revisit What Matters Most

Before deciding where to give, take a moment to reflect on why you give.

Perhaps you're passionate about expanding educational opportunities, supporting local families, protecting the environment, or advancing medical research.

Your priorities may have evolved over the past year, and that's okay. Revisiting your charitable goals helps ensure your giving continues to reflect your values.

A helpful question to ask yourself is: If my giving had a mission statement, what would it say?

2. Review Your Giving So Far

Take a look at the organizations you've supported throughout the year.

Which causes have remained especially meaningful to you? Are there nonprofits you'd like to support again? Have you discovered new organizations whose missions align with your priorities?

For those with donor-advised funds (DAFs), this is also a good time to review your account balance and grant history.

Understanding where you've already made an impact can help guide your next steps.

3. Remember That Giving Doesn't Have to Be Complicated

One of the benefits of a donor-advised fund is the flexibility it provides.

With a DAF, donors can contribute charitable assets to their fund and recommend grants to eligible nonprofit organizations over time.

This means charitable planning and charitable distributions don't necessarily need to happen at the same moment.

For donors who have already contributed to a DAF, year-end giving may be as simple as reviewing available funds and recommending grants to organizations they care about.

4. Think Beyond Traditional Cash Donations

Cash isn't the only way to support charitable causes.

Depending on your financial circumstances, donating appreciated securities or other eligible assets may be worth considering.

For example, contributing appreciated stock held for more than one year may offer certain tax advantages compared with selling the stock and donating the proceeds, subject to applicable rules and individual circumstances.

Working with a financial or tax advisor can help you determine which approach best supports your charitable and financial goals.

5. Give Yourself Time Before Year-End

December can be a busy month for donors and nonprofit organizations alike.

Starting your planning in October or November gives you time to research organizations, review your finances, and understand any processing deadlines.

If you're planning to recommend grants from a DAF, remember that grant processing times can vary. Submitting recommendations early can help organizations receive support when it's needed.

It's also important to distinguish between contributing to a DAF and recommending a grant from one. A qualifying contribution to a DAF may be eligible for a charitable tax deduction, while a subsequent grant from that DAF does not generate an additional deduction for the donor.
